Celebrating Triumph’s official delivery of 765cc triple Moto2TM race engines, in preparation for the 2019 FIM Moto2TM World Championship.

Showcase activity

Delivering the final engine for the Moto2TM 2019 season onwards

  • Triumph 765cc Moto2TM engine development phase was then fully completed, following almost two years of development and rigorous testing
  • Performance targets were fully delivered and the engine was ready for racing
  • Magneti Marelli ECU, Moto2TM chassis manufacturer and race team testing were then in their final stage

The official Triumph engine handover marked the end of the full engine development and the beginning of the new era of Triumph Moto2 765cc powered motorcycles – which were seen in action on track for the first time at the Moto2 team testing at Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto from November 23 – 25.

Following almost two years of intensive development and testing, the project was delivered by a dedicated team from Triumph, Dorna, Externpro, Magneti Marelli and specialist rider input from several former Moto2 and British SuperSport competitors.

TRIUMPH 2019 756cc MOTO2TM ENGINE PARTNERSHIP 

With a three-year contract with Dorna – the commercial rights holder of MotoGPTM – Triumph is set to supply dedicated race-tuned 765cc Triumph Triple engines based on the class-leading 2017 Triumph Street Triple engine.

The new engine is a significant evolution of the race-winning Daytona 675R engine that powered supersport wins at the Isle of Man TT, Daytona 200 and British Supersport Championships in 2014 and 2015.

Based on the highest specification 765cc Street Triple RS engine, it was developed and tuned for a major step up in power and torque for Moto2TM, with the following modifications:

  • Modified cylinder head with revised inlet and exhaust ports for optimized fuel flow
  • Titanium valves and stiffer valve springs for increased rpms
  • Low output race alternator kit for reduced inertia
  • Taller 1st gear ratio
  • Race developed slipper clutch (tunable)
  • Race-specific ECU developed with Magneti Marelli
  • Revised engine covers for reduced width
  • Different sump to allow for improved header run

 

In ‘road’ setup the new 765cc engine in the class-leading Street Triple RS delivers the highest ever level of performance for a Street Triple, delivering 121 horsepower at 11,700 rpm and 57 foot-pounds of torque at 10,800 rpm.

Compared with the previous generation Street Triple engine, there are more than 80 new parts including an increase to the bore and stroke.

All-new engine components include:

  • New crank
  • New pistons
  • New connecting rods and balancer shaft
  • Nikasil plated aluminum barrels
  • Revised gearbox

 

The race-specification Triumph 765cc Moto2TM engine was developed further to allow the engine to breathe more freely and rev harder than the production motorcycle, increasing overall performance. Other changes were made specifically to adapt the engine for race use.
